Good looking DIY: REVERSE Tie Dye (the art of bleach tie-dying your jeans)

the art of DIY reverse bleach tie dye for jeans

Sometimes mistakes are made to happen.

Not only a great validation for looking at ‘the glass half full’ – but to challenge yourself to make the most of certain situations…

Example at hand: when a friend accidentally spills a bit bleach on the left cheek of your favorite deep scarlet red skinnies!

After a few moments of saving face by holding back the tears (note to self: become less attached to wardrobe!) that curious little light bulb went off. The bleach spot actually came out a very complimentary color… a magic bit of research later, it was time to test out a touch of reverse tie dye:

COLLECT THE GOODS:
-bleach
-elastic bands
-big bucket / washing sink
-rubber gloves
-heavily pigmented colored jeans looking for a new look!

WALK THE WALK:
1. soak jeans in cold water, wring/spin cycle to damp
2. twist & turn the jeans as tight as you can (this is where rubber gloves become essential!)
3. create knotted areas and tie securely with elastic bands (these are the areas that stay colored)
4. create a bucket/tub of bleach water, the suggestion is to dilute say 1/3bleach to 2/3water
5. let soak for 1-6 hours depending on your desired look (note: when dried, the bleach area will lighten even more)
6. …if you’re a risk taker like me, use your discretion but I dripped straight bleach on certain areas to heighten the process!
7. untie & unwind, rinse in water, hang to dry to set in bleach
8. give them a wash through the laundry before wearing for a final set and to remove some of the bleach scent

*note* the bleach can reduce the strength of the denim so I highly suggest making sure the crotch/lower bum area of your jeans is part of the inside of a knot to reduce bleach exposure & eventual holes…!

BEFORE: red FCUK skinny jeans

THE GOODS: elastics, gloves, denim

VOILA: checking out the bleach work

PATIENCE: dying time is key

…well for the selected few to start – aka for the humble abode of own, my NYC pied-à-terre to be exact.

It’s a “cozy” kind of place. Truly makes up for lack of space with a splash of character here and there. Hence, why not take the opportunity to customize a few things. And as many are already are aware of, I have a little thing known as a love for soft silky leather!

Process was by far a ‘learn as I go’ experience. Just the way I like it, throwing myself head first into the challenge. Watch as I turn IKEA into Sienna Ray with a few simple tools and a ton of patience:

My name is Kaylee Johnston, up-and-coming electro pop singer. I write all of  my own material and I’m currently working on my debut album. It’s Influenced by spirited females such as Heart, Joan Jett, Robyn, and Lady Gaga, my sound is up beat, fresh, and iconic.

My Sienna Ray bags are the perfect accessory for my busy life. Aside from the obvious items (cash, credit card, and keys), I never forget to bring a bold MAC lipstick shade and fav Barkleys organic mints. You’ll also find a little ziplock full of almonds floating around in there somewhere.

‘I have two Sienna Ray bags and I couldn’t tell you which one I love more. I have a light yellow leather bag that is really comfortable to wear, and I usually wear it on sunny days. My other bag is white leather with black salmon skin detail… this one is my go-to bag for late nights and good times!’ – Kaylee Johnston

Add a comment

Sienna Ray & Co., lovable leather handbags & accessories, has spread its wings from Vancouver to NYC’s Mott Street in a PopUp shop sure to please. The boutique, which will be open from Thanksgiving weekend until Christmas Eve, offers a selection of special edition handbags, clutches, cosmetic cases and leather goods catering to the East Coast woman. For the first time Sienna Ray & Co. will debut a capsule collection of men’s small leather goods, RAY87, including wallets, cardholders, and laptop bags. The PopUp will be a true reflection of the brand’s marketing statement, ‘luxurious from the outside in’, capturing the playfulness in the overall shopping experience for it’s customers.

The boutique will embody a similar vision to the handbags: clean and inquisitive, giving customers the opportunity to touch and feel the product, also to see that there really is more then meets the eye. Each handbag is multifaceted just like the New York woman, a bag to rely on that can be with you and enhance your energy from day to night.

“Immediately when we signed the lease I wanted to include other inspiring designers in this opportunity and initiated a series of events ‘PopUp in a PopUp’. I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the help and support from friends, family and industry successors. I feel the PopUp shop is a true test to the brand. I see crisp white walls, edited product, multiple color stories; with accent of our signature lining from dress forms to delicately wrapped Christmas parcels, surrounding the atmosphere with holiday love and gift giving.

The location could not be more fitting in the high-end independent design area of NoLita. I feel extremely humbled to be in a radius of talented designers and brands. I am equally so proud to embrace my Vancouver roots, being situated on a prime shopping trail of Canadian success starting with Artizta on Broadway/Prince, John Fluevog footwear on Mulberry and now Sienna Ray & Co. around the corner.”- Founder & Creative Director, Natalie Kathleen

The Sienna Ray PopUp is located at 252 Mott St, just north of Prince St. Open 7 days a week Novovember 23 – December 24, 2012. Store hours: 11AM-7PM Mon-Sat & 12pm-6pm Sun.

cutest & coolest NYC coffee shops in and around NoHo

Add a comment

As we know, New Yorkers run off caffeine… it is almost like a “cool cult” to be at the latest happenin coffee shop in town. Whether you are a local, or just visiting here are our top pics, def give these spots a try!

#1.  la colombe

With 3 locations in NYC (2 being located on lafayette st) this place is what we call OFFICIAL. Our fav location of the 3 is by far NOHO, due to the fact that it is pretty big with plenty of space to sit and have a convo with a friend. or get lost in a good book. The inside has an industrial vibe, and we are also suckers for the cute headscarves that all the baristas wear. Two warnings: there is NO wifi or soy milk on the premises.

#2.  Think

I might be a little bias on this one, but it has to be my personal favorite of the bunch! Although the coffee is deff a little pricey, it is more about the “experience”. Think has 4 locations in NYC (2 which have free wifi) but I would have to say that the bleecker street spot is the best. It is in such a cute area filled with local boutiques and shops. The coffee is great, they are socially and environmentally conscious, the workers wear cute fidora hats, and the music is cool. What’s not to love?

#3. Gasoline Alley

Gasoline Alley is a cool spot located in Noho on Lafayette (btw Houston & Bleecker). It is supper small, made for in-and-out visits, but can give you that morning fix in a hurry! The coffee is strong, but made well, and the donuts are from a DOUGH (a bakery in Brooklyn) and are to die for!

#4.  Joe

This place is known for the consistency, which is really good coffee every time! …btw it is cash only!

#5. Ost Cafe

Located in the east village, this cool dig has floor to ceiling windows that open and give a beautiful vibe with excellent light. Another plus of this place is that it is very affordable $2 for coffee without sacrificing the taste. Our only compliant is that it’s very small and sometimes hard to get a table. (but well worth it)

#6. Irving

Located in the Gramercy district, this place is sure to please. It’s cosiness and space is just perfect, not to mention the delish coffee! This is also a great spot for lunch. You might even spot a celeb or two here!

Oyster Seafood & Rawbar

Oyster Seafood & Rawbar

A small, charming pearl tucked into the old Stock Exchange Building. Buck-a-shuck daily from 4 to 7 p.m.; or an 18-piece mix for $36 any time of day. Romantic vibe for date nights. 475 Howe St., 604-899-0323

Cork & Fin

Buck-a-shuck on Monday nights – all night long – with more than one local variety to choose from. The champagne mignonette at this small Gastown boite is the fizziest around. 221 Carrall St., 604-569-2215

Coast

Coast

Slide up to the bar from 3 to 5 p.m. for buck-a-shuck. Smile nicely at the bartender and he might slip in some Kusshis or other premium varieties. Good selection of East Coast oysters. 1045 Alberni St., 604-685-5010

Joe Fortes Patio

Joe Fortes Patio

And, I make my final selection (good times last night!) as Joe Fortes, they have $1.00 oysters too, AND $5.00 glasses of wine plus 50% off their appy menu in the bar.

Vancouver, we have lots of options.

meatpacking monday: take a stroll through NYC’s High Line park & get inspired!

One of the coolest spots in NYC by far has to be the High Line park, located on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. Founded by community residents in 1999, this city sanctuary was built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan. From catching some rays, to having a picnic, or even hosting a runway show, the High Line has it all. Almost everyday of the week this public park has an event or attraction for it’s visitors. If you live in NYC, or are just visiting this is a M U S T see.

sweet spring picks! (the essentials for 2012)

Add a comment

Spring is the full swing! Here at Sienna Ray we are so excited to flaunt our new “field of dreams” SS12 collection filled with pops of bright color to accentuate any outfit! We also feel that there are some necessary wardrobe staples that every woman should get in her closet for spring 2012. We understand the terms “ballin on a budget” – basically look rich and shop cheap (as blogger Denny Wenny would say). Here are our tip picks- do I smell a shopping spree coming on? ;)

This bright yellow lemon structured  blazer from Top Shop is a MUST! We love the color and it screams spring. For $132.00 it is a piece that will stay in your closet for quite some time.

This bright pink blazer from H&M is the definition of chic, and for $29.99- WHAT A STEAL! Can we please have this in every color??!!!

We have to be a bit bias ;) These sky blue “avenue” leather loafers are from Sienna Ray & Co.’s SS12 collection. They are made with the softest lambskin leather, “smooth as butter”. These babies are  supper light, and will give you the illusion of walking on air! The avenue loafers go for $288…after all, shoes are a girls best friend.

Get your sparkle on! These glitzy glam flats are also from Sienna Ray & Co.’s SS12 collection. The “Louise” flats are the perfect summer shoe- from the beach to the Hamptons they are extremely wearable. They are made from the finest leathers…$149 & made to last! Every woman loves a little sparkle!

Step up your color game this spring! Colored jeans are in! Put away those old blue or black jeans, and get daring. These coral skinnies are from Paris Blues for Alloy, don’t worry you won’t have to break the bank- $29.90.

IN LOVE with these Jcrew tall café capris $89!!! They come in 9 different color options, what a perfect pair of pants for work! Spice up your office wardrobe with some color.

Simple, clean, and comfortable (in a variety of colors) for $ 17. Victoria Secret’s boyfriend T is a necessity for spring, and that’s that!!

What is summer really without a maxi dress? If this AX Paris bag over vest dress is not already in your closet then you are committing a fashion crime. For £20.00 get on it!

Three words: spring time swag! We are ♥’n the “Dalilha” sunnies by Jimmy Swagg. Big framed and oversized glasses are SO in for spring, get with the now. For $50 these shades will keep you cool all summer.

Sizzle this spring/summer in swimwear by Askua Collections. Now I know what your thinking, not everyone is ready to bust of the bikini. Aksua also does customized bathing suits to fit on any body type. We love their collections of color and prints, summa time fierce!

Well we had to save the best for last!! This “babette” mini-cross body by Sienna Ray & Co.  is our #1 seller for spring $349 (a pretty penny yes but so worth it!). Whether you opt to grab the slim top handle or rock the adjustable chain strap, this bag is ready to go anywhere at anytime.

Boom, done, over. The “jolie” everyday satchel by Sienna will be your new best friend. Big enough to use as a carry-on for traveling, and versatile enough to be your go-to everyday thang $449.

designers are taking advatnge of this new trend

The ombre trend has been pretty major in fashion this year & the beauty world caught on as well! From our clothes to our hair & right down to our nails, everyone’s been rocking something with a gradient. In the recent Jen Kao SS2012 show at NYFW, the models were caught backstage with manicures called “Lethal Love” by CND. These were some amazing airbrushed ombre nails that went from black to gorgeous jewel-toned coloured tips.  Manicurists around the world have been trying to recreate this look without an airbrush- yet still have that same glam look. We have the inside scoop just for you! Now you can try it yourself from home…

Up your nail-art game! We are obsessed with these artsy stick on options. Just when we thought we have seen it all-along comes Sephora with their totally rad entry into the category. The new Sephora by OPI Trend Tips are the same trusty old nail polish strips we’ve all come to know and love, but in an amazing array of super-cool new patterns. (much more variety & better quality then Sally H.)

genious designer Jason Wu for Target!

Next month, Jason will debuts his 53-piece “gamine chic” collection for target, a very tightly edited collection compared to the 500 missoni pieces that took target by storm. The goods look pretty cool, with a certain ladylike appeal to match that of Wu’s very pricey main line, and the prices are certainly cheap ranging from $30-60. CANT WAIT!!!

Maini for H&M= MAGIC!

Versace relaunches line for H&M...i smell sucess?

H&M is on fiyahhhh! They just announced its next designer collaboration will be with Italian fashion house Marni. The Swedish retailer caused global hysteria earlier this month when the Versace for H&M line went on sale, and its earlier collaborations with high-end brands such as Lanvin and Sonia Rykiel have been just as successful. It will be available in 260 stores worldwide and online as of March 8, 2012. Will you be buying? 2012 will also see the release of a second round of designs from Versace creative director Donatella, whose Fall 2012 sold out in just half an hour in some stores. Fans of the collection can start preparing for the launch of the Versace for H&M cruise collection. Last week a spokesperson for H&M confirmed Donatella’s Spring pre-collection will be available January 19, although only in countries where H&M has an e-commerce site such as the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Get your credit cards ready!

#2.

Oscar de la Renta for Beats by Dr. Dre

gime gimie gimie!!

Oscar de la Renta just released a set of luxe headphones in collaboration with Dr. Dre, which we are extremely excited about. The Beats by Dr. Dre headphones are covered in silver fox fur and of course, PETA has something to say about it. They sent a letter directly to Dre asking him to keep fur and exotic animal skins out of the product. Dre & Oscar haven’t made any comments about it yet- but lets just say I hope they stay just the way they are.

#1.

artist Yayoi Kusama for Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with the late graffiti artist Stephen Sprouse in 2001 was probably the most exciting thing to happen to the monogrammed bag since the invention of the alphabet!  Their newest collab with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who’s known for her red-and-white polka-dot art, might be just as brilliant. What fashionista doesnt have a soft spot for a little Lewy? Her spots will appear on LV products ranging from bags to clothing to jewelry this summer (though don’t plan on finding them on the Fashion Week runways in February)

PETA we are sorry- but fur is just too fabulous! It seems that nearly every designer in the industry is making the rainbow connection & giving their plush pelts-fox, rabbit and mink vibrant dye jobs. (and I’m not complaining!) In times of an economic downturn, the fashion world looks to ways to renew our desire for luxury. Can you say contradiction? BUT in many ways it stands to reason that fur has played such a prominent role on the runways for years *running* the luxury upscale market. Colored furs have always been around, but they are back on the block and here to stay for winter2012. Santa is coming soon…is a psychedelic rabbit or mink on your Christmas list? x0

Here at Sienna Ray, we are ALL ABOUT the details. Haute holiday nails are the perfect accessory to your glammed out outfit. Instead of going for the “safe” red choice that you get every year- add some pizzaz! Christmas gives you that free pass to bring out your inner child, so that means nail designs are allowed (without looking like a 5 year old girl or flashy chunga). Our personal favs are the candy cane strips & china glaze all in one polish. What are your favs? fab finds: 3 holiday Party Looks on a Budget

Add a comment

So many parties to attend, so little time…what’s a girl to do? We’ve got three words for you: gold, silver, and black. Whether it’s an office party, a Christmas party with your friends or a night out, here are some affordable looks that will wow the crowd at any party! They each represent a festive color; gold and glamorous, sassy and silver, and chic black! The question is, which look is your favorite?

the golden

If you love gold and sequins this is the time to shine! At Christmas and New Year’s parties anything goes and the more you sparkle the better! Keep the rest of the accessories in earthy tones to mellow out the sequins – you don’t want to look like a disco ball!

the silver

Do you want to feel like a modern day greek goddess for a night? Then this silver attire is just right for you. This stand out dress will give you a unique party look, which is perfect for both Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Pair the dress with the trendy feather earrings and a pair of grey shoes – because the dress is so shiny stick with more subtle shoe color.

the black

The little black dress will never go out of style and wearing a little black dress to a Christmas party is always a good option. Make it more exciting with gold accessories and details – like these lovelym high heels! This look is perfect for an office Christmas party, or another more formal, but festive event!

trendy tips: Remember…Hair is Your BEST Accessory

Add a comment

one of the hottest winter trends- "blue black"

grown out blonde- the "ombre" came into fashion over the last year or so. colorists have now perfected the art of the impeccable "fade"...who knew roots could look so good?

dark & daring- you have to have some serious kahunas to pull this one off. the trend is a dark base with bold vibrant shades of color such as purple, blue, red, and green.

dark chocolate brown- these hues make your skin look younger and more feminine

metallic blonde- it doesn’t look good on everyone...but, if you’re already a blonde, go a little lighter this season

red hot- the IT color this season and the great thing about it is that it works for almost all skin types

Ladies- remember your hair is your BEST accessory. Coloring your hair is the ultimate creative way to express your personal style and fashion sense. Serious trend influencers change their hair as they change their seasonal wardrobe. Don’t  be afraid! Take some risks! We suggest that you start with something small, such as some highlights or lowlights (even an overall color booster) to ease you into the process. After you feel comfortable with the change try something new next time. And don’t worry- I know you do not want to poison your hair and make it dry or fried…there are some amazing organic and natural color products in the market now. So next time you go for that boring trim- take a chance on some color!

a great watch is key

it's an arm party...and your invited

Whoever said “less is more” clearly lost their invite. It’s as simple as this- go Big or go Home! The latest trend on all fashion influencers is the arm party: meaning LOTS of bracelets, cuffs, charms, and even strips of string or leather. Lets start from the basic invites. Threaded bracelets are considered the “furniture” of the party and can add a bit of “coolness” or youth in between your staples. Threaded bracelets can also be interchangeable with more traditional friendship bracelets or strips of leather tied. Next lets add in some metal pieces. Chains, spikes, snakes, & skulls…bring it baby! Now to the VIP invites: bust out your most prized pieces in your jewelry box- cartier, marc jacobs cuffs, vintage watch, or large leather snap band from your trip to Europe.

Now to help you get your arm party in order, here are some adorbs pieces to start with

pass the turkey cocktail

cheers to you!

The time of year for cranberries is here! Thanksgiving is around the corner, and plan on celebrating without a cocktail, don’t you? (Or maybe instead of celebrating, you’ll just be coping with relatives. Either way, a cocktail is in order.) Here are some fabulous cranberry cocktails for your holiday:

1. Grateful Cranberry Cocktail: This fall cranberry cocktail is perfect for Thanksgiving. It’s light enough that it won’t compete with a plate full of turkey and mashed potatoes. But the unique mixture of cranberry, honey, bourbon, green tea and ginger ale is full enough to satisfy the taste buds.

-1 1/2 oz. bourbon
-1 oz. cranberry-honey syrup
-Green tea flavored ginger ale
-Frozen cranberries
-Crushed ice

Fill collins glass three-quarters full with crushed ice and frozen cranberries.  Pour in bourbon and syrup, then top off with ginger ale.

2. Poinsettia Cocktail: This classic champagne cocktail is wonderful for holiday entertaining. Light and refreshing, the Poinsettia Cocktail ads an extra bit of holiday cheer to any gathering.

- Champagne
- 1/2 oz. Cointreau
- 3 oz. Cranberry Juice

Add chilled Cointreau and Cranberry to chilled champagne glass. Stir and top with Champagne just before serving.

3. Pass the Turkey: Make this bourbon creation paired with cranberry, cider, sage and thyme and you won’t be sorry.

- 1.5 oz. Wild Turkey 101
- 2 oz. apple cider
- 1 tbs. cranberry jelly
- 1 sprig fresh sage
- 1 sprig fresh thyme

Muddle sage and thyme with apple cider.  Add ice, top with Wild Turkey and cranberry jelly.  Shake well, strain over ice in a glass rimmed with turkey juice and breadcrumbs.

ENJOY!

3 step process for Sally Hansen nail stickers

funky patterns & bright colors - Sally Hansen stickers

Listen up ladies, we have the inside scoop for manicures that last more then a week. We all know that in the fashion industry nails are part of your complete outfit- they are also the first thing a potential client can notice while shaking hands. Who has the time to sit in a nail salon weekly? As women, we are constantly on the go and manicures tend to chip easily. Try out these three solutions to a long lasting manicure and see which one works best for you:

Shellac- Shellac is billed as the ultimate long-lasting manicure, and as I can’t keep my nails neat for more than three days, I was unable to say no to the chance of perfect nail polish for up to two weeks. Shellac combines the resilient finish of a gel nail overlay with the ease of paint-on color. The application process is simple. A clear base coat is applied, which is then ‘cured’ for 20 seconds in an ultraviolet lightbox. Two coats of colored polish follow, each of which needs a minute’s curing, then a high-gloss top-coat, a final 20-second blast of light and, voila, it’s all done. The average shellac manicure runs about $40.

Minx- Minx nails are the latest rage in Hollywood, and the trend is quickly picking up everywhere else. Celebrities like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rhianna are big fans, and the manicures were seen on the Paris Fashion Week runways, and in Vogue, Allure, Elle and In Style. Minx nails are a heated, flexible film that fit on top your nails, like a sticker. Your Minx manicurist will trim them up and seal them onto your nail. They are waterproof, chip-proof and chemical free. (AH-mazing!) The price of Minx nails range from $30-$55…but well worth it.

Sally Hanson Nail Stickers- If you are running low on cash & time try out Sally Hanson’s do it yourself nail stickers. These aren’t like the nail stickers of childhood, i.e. stick-ons of flowers or stars. Sally Hansen strips are made with real nail polish, and are supposed to look like they were painted onto your nails. The nail strips come in 24 different styles ranging from bright solids like orange and yellow to a multitude of patterns including animal prints, glitters, camo, and denim. Three easy steps and you are on your way to fabulous fingers! The best part about Sally Hanson’s are the price $9.99 a pack.

Hey ladies, fall is here and it is coming to that time of the year- put those bathing suits away and pull out the sweaters. No more beach doesn’t have to mean no more tan! A healthy sun kissed glow goes perfectly with every outfit no natter what season you are in.  I wonder if someone told Snooki that UV exposure can causes dry leathery skin.  Not only does it look bad-but it’s essentially melanoma waiting to happen. There are 100’s of sunless tanning products out there, and these days that orange look is a thing of the past. Bye-bye carrot and hello beautiful! One great option is a spray tan- if you can’t afford personal application by a professional, try the booths.  The west way to go is self-tanning -beauty experts have now perfect these products to provide the most natural look.  After much research and personal options from fellow women, the best products on the market right now are: Aveeno Continuous Radiance Moisturizing lotion, Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel, Jergens Natural Glow Express, and L’Occitane Sunshine Lotion.  Remember pale is stale and tan is trendy.

Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) was originally conceived by Anna Wintour in 2008. For me, FNO is like a city wide fashion show that is open to the public. Designers and important people in the fashion industry make appearances at retail stores that are showing their latest fashion. FNO is definitely a love child of fashion and fun.

To list a couple of my favorite in store events on 10/8…

Phillip Lim boutique will be transformed into a ‘Girls on Bikes stop’ in the vein of a truck stop but for chic girls around town who ride bikes! 6pm – 11pm

Oscar de la renta will have a special FNO collection available online

I got very excited when Natalie suggested I write about Tubo Hotel in Mexico. That is because their website is partially written in Spanish- my minor finally came in handy aha! To be honest, I read a short blurb in Spanish on the welcome page before quickly clicking onto the “Frequently Asked Questions” tab.

What amazes me about the place isn’t the ambiance, decor, or concept, but the price. The room goes for only $500 pesos all year  round! Take a look at what cool architecture the hotel is!

feminine friday: posing tips

Add a comment
Want to look good (in person) and in a picture? Make up and hair aren’t the only things you can do to enhance your looks. Here are a few helpful posing tricks and tips that will make you shine in pictures.
  1. Cross your legs, put your bag in front of you or your hands on your thighs. Smile demurely.
  2. Placing your hands on your hips and pull elbows back.
  3. Putting your hands on your hips creates an illusion that your legs are longer than they actually are.
  4. Put chin down and tilt head a little.
  5. As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn’t look like you’re posing. It should look natural.

travelled thursday: mobile fashion, convoluted construct

Add a comment

Pop up stores and businesses like Cool Haus has taken retailing to the next level. This weekend while in Soho, I stumbled upon the 83 Anomaly, an installation disguised truck that houses Convoluted Construct, a line of art inspired graphic tees. Now next time you go shopping, would you rather make it an experiential one, or would you rather visit a traditional store.

3. Alexander McQueen at the MET, actually standing in line while I write most of this! Aka weekday and early in the am is best (it’s 2pm and taking at least an hour) plus there’s a rooftop bar with a delightful view open until 6pm

4. Out of city adventure? Even as you set foot on the train you can feel the beach vibe! About 2 hours (train to bayshore then ferry to ocean beach was what we did) you can be on Fire Island with the rest of manhattan that needs an escape.  So picturesque, no vehicles on the island, radio flyer wagons are typical use to get beach chairs & cool drinks through the pathways to find your perfect little piece of beach heaven….!

What will you be doing this weekend? Will you be seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part two?

In celebration of Harry Potter’s last series that is hitting theaters at midnight today, Sienna Ray is going to highlight a couple of Harry Potter landmarks in London. When visiting, be sure to stop by the Gloucester Cathedral and the infamous University city in Oxford!

Happy Thursday and I hope all of the die hard fans out there were able to get their hands on the tickets for tonight! Be sure to let us know how the movie went!

part#2: shop, shop, SHOPPING!

1. Soho: by far the best selection and ambiance, everything from highstreet brands to designer labels, my fav places are between 7th & broadway / houston & grand

got a thing chuck taylor's? check out the converse store in SoHo

2. Flatiron district: amazing homewear stores and large versions of your typical zara/bcbg type stores

3. Upper east & 5th ave: I group these two even though they are quite different – I’d power through in a day and spend more time downtown – must see on 5th is Henry Bendel’s and up east for the athletic types I adore eveythjng in the cute track & field boutique from brazil

4. Day trip: for serious “while we are in the USA” shopping, head to port authority bus station and in less than an hour you’ll be at jersey park mall… Can easily blow a whole day and a fair bit of cash – but in return it’s sweetest ever deals and actually a quality selection, off 5th (SAKS discount) is a must visit

"shopping is my cardio"

5. Bleeker street boutiques, between, famous magnoila’s bakery (supposedly the ones who started the current cupcake craze), designer and higher-end branded stores, I have spent a few shopping trips in NARS, Fresh, intermix, MAC, 7 jeans and london’s Reiss to say a few…

WOW if you have the energy this glowing city does not stop… Here’s a few memory making activities that filled my weekends & evenings this spring & into summer:

part#1: OUTDOOR/PATIO/ROOFTOP DRINKS (in no official order, all equally fab!):

1. Biergarten at the standard hotel in the meatpacking district – picnic table style, crowded as ever with a popular & vibrant new yorkers

2. Mé Bar in Korea town, secret gem of a rooftop with $22 bottles of wine, small patio area, least “glam” of my selections which is often a nice change, sweet view of Rockefeller center which is literally a block away, 32nd street between 5th & 6th, enter the

3. Central park, byob + picnic basket, my favorite area is here: between turtle pond & the great lawn

4. The frying pan, on the river near chelsea, a couple old boats tied up to the pier, fresh, fun and can get a bit crazy into the evenings… fantastic sunset views to boot

5. Corner of 10th St & west 4th St in the west village (yes both streets, love the proper village vibe in this area!) just a block down from the apt I call home in nyc, 4 bar/restaurants right on that corner with good looking young people… been know as my gf’s and my “local” – plenty of cafes/restaurants/bars all throughout the area between there and the meat packing districts, many with either opened up walls/windows, streetside tables, back gardens etc

6. Soho park, great little place with well priced wine, sit in the tiny garden area and put your feet up after hours of soho wandering and shopping! (get your daily dose of greens with their chicago style fried zucchini stix)

7. Oh cannot forget about stone street in the business district, busy most nights but likely wed & thurs are your best bets for suited man watching – bars line both sides of the picnic table filled cobblestone street – the Mexican place is know to do some of the best gauc in the city

8. Shake shack, a nyc staple, there’s a bunch of these throughout the city but the main attraction would be the one in Madison square park, outdoor seating and great people watching – good tie on for shopping in the flat iron district

9. Back again at the meatpacking district, the well-known brasserie Pastis attracts a very international crowd: cannot go wrong with fab french fair paired with curbside & starstudded ‘hidden-behind sunglasses’ celeb spotting

…more? of course! share your favourite places with us too!

now time to get out & play xx

summer resolution: shop sustainable

Add a comment

Summer is the season to kick, back, relax, and enjoy the weather. By this time, I am sure some (including myself) have forgotten/ given up on their new years resolution plan. Take advantage of the low key season to get back on track with your goals and plans.

Earlier this year I had planned on shopping sustainable for a change. Well, surprise surprise I finally found the incredible, Sustainable NYC store. They carry cool stuff like: Recycled tin maple syrup candle and recycled chain bottle opener. I think I have found myself a new favorite store. It feels amazing to follow through with your plans and I encourage everyone to do the same!

There is a certain thrill you get from being an early adopter. Hence when I found out through Daily Candy about the recent opening of Victory Garden, their super cute website quickly sent me down to West Village to be one of the first people to try  the infamous goat milk frozen yogurt!

Opening only just last Friday, their unique flavors such as rose & mastic (tree resin from pine tree in Greece!) surely cannot be found elsewhere. To my surprise, the frozen yogurt was really light and does not have a strong odor to it like goat cheese does.

…on a similar note while obviously having cool iced treats filling my brain these days, I am probably a late adopter to the Pop Bar ( of Gilt City’s “Unique Sweets” tour). Hello clever invention and good looking fro yo popsicles! Where have I been all this time!? The store also makes your design tastebuds go ohh lala- refer to photos. I cannot say enough of this place. As I was strolling down the sunny streets of the Manhattan’s West Village, the window display at this trendy boutique stopped me in my tracks! It was first the Brasilian melissa shoes that caught my eye, then realized the entire store was full of very hard-to-find international designers for both, men and women.  The fresh environment & chats with the Italian owner left me energized for the rest of my evening!

fine find: business mag stereotypes the bag lady

Add a comment

Handbags, handbags, handbags… people are often forwarding me emails, handing me magazine cut-outs, & graciously gifting me everything from coffee-table books to 365 day box calendars – all filled with pictures & information on the ever amazing niche of handbags.

And most recently my attentive accountant set the tone of our meeting with a very pleasant surprise: two pages of an intimately informative article on the subject at hand, and from Bloomberg Business of all publications! The story is so well written – and uniquely illustrated – that I just cannot resisit sharing with you, enjoy:

What Your Purse is Saying About You

By Meredith Stebbins

To assess a lady’s character, look no further than the handbag she carries to work. “It is an absolute indicator of who they are and what their style is,” says Rachel Zoe, celebrity stylist and entrepreneur. Since a purse’s size and shape isn’t limiting like a pair of skinny jeans, a bag is an easy way for a woman to express herself —especially in the workplace. “For the majority of women, the handbag is the most important part of the outfit because it doesn’t have to do with your body type,” says Kate Schelter, a New York-based stylist and brand consultant. Perhaps that’s why the global luxury handbag and accessories market is about $24 billion, according to Coach CEO Lew Frankfort.

Whether it’s an oversize carryall or structured satchel, a bag’s details—right down to the buckle—reveal clues about its owner. Not to mention that “how you wear the bag is just as important as the bag itself,” adds Schelter. Slinging it across your body sends a different signal than nestling it on the crux of your arm. Having your assistant tote it for you says something, too.

In order to decode the language of work-bag-speak, Bloomberg Businessweek called on a panel of fashion experts, including Zoe; Schelter; International Best-Dressed List Hall of Fame honoree Amy Fine Collins; and handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff. Next time you’re in the elevator, think twice about rifling around that mammoth hobo for your ID badge: You’re giving off a disorganized vibe.

Albeit the feeling of summer has quickly slipped away, the reality is that we all need & want to keep our skin glowing gracefully throughout the more grey months of the year as well.

And even further, we want to keep our supple skin free of sun damage. Not only does the misery of sun spots drive me up the wall, I realize now more than ever that sun damage is serious.  Hearing way too many stories of skin cancers really starts to make the fact hit home.

Now after a summer of testing out UV protection specific for under makeup, my conclusion comes in strong: shu eumura does a wonderful airy, smooth UV under base mousse. I enjoy the 80′s “mousse” action plus I find myself using this after my skin care (which I let absorb for 5 minutes first) and skipping my primer as the mousse leaves a nice smooth feeling, perfect for applying further makeup products. It also has a beige tint, however I would say this is not all that noticeable, at best it gives a slight freshness to my skin tone.

I’ll be heading to Holt Renfrew today to pick up a new bottle: just as the sun has disappeared from the nearly-fall sky, the last pump cleared up my mini mousee this morning…

For most of us it’s that “in-between” season: that little bit too warm to wear your winter coat but a tad bit on the chilly side to get the legs out on show.

And I don’t know about you, but I cringe at the feeling and sight of good ole’ fashion neutral coloured pantyhouse…. do you grin and bare the goosebumps on your pasty winterized legs – or – grow your patience and wait for the true summertime heat?

Solution: founded by Jessica Halabi of Edmonton (who must know what real patience is when it snowed nearby just last week, ouch!) who created the hand splatter painted nude tight, oh so sexy!!

Cannot imagine how she paints these – are her legs stained with the backsplash hue of paints… but nonetheless I so want a pair, and only $20 for such a wearable original piece of art!

It is that time again – spent sunday dispersing clothes ALL over my apartment: this pile “goodbye til next winter”, that pile “maybe it just needs a bit of an alteration so that I wear it more often…”, and the one way over there “good & done, memories are all is left with these pieces worn to extinction!”

Every item has it’s own unique lifespan… as much as I will myself to invent that magic potion keeping puppie dogs cute and puppy-like thier whole lifespan, I wish I could spread magic fairy dust over my favourite tops to keep them looking pristine and fresh forever. But sadly the relization is that neither are true nor coming to life any day too soon.

So divide & conquer, set aside the favourite cooler weather clothes for hopes of a fresh feeling when I pull them out next year and hit the streets to come up with a few new items to mix in and spruce up last years springtime favourites.  To my delight (and not my visa’s delight…) I had quite the success in Club Monico. A hit and miss store for me, this time around the flowy silks & buttery jerseys were a done deal: it did take me to try on the ENTIRE store, my new favourite personal shopper there will vouch for me!

I don’t know about you, but I always find it tricky for my overseas gift giving… Do you purchase online to save those crazy shipping charges or suck them up so you can personalize your gift like you know you really want to!?

My solution this year: buy the fancy toys online for the nieces and nephews (you know that’s all they want!) and slip a little something extra in the card to the moms/dads/aunts/uncles…

Rainy day hair?… disguise it under a Hot Hat!

Add a comment

Yes, it’s fabulous fall fashion time and thankful that on days like today (and for us Vancouverites, most fall days!) the hottest trend is to highlight your outfit with a one of kind hat.

Not only does this fashion statement save us from those nasty humid-day-fly-aways it also allows us to give the snooze button that extra press as we can efficiently and swiftly tuck away our tame in a matter of seconds. Proving dressing up your look with a hat can add so much more to the possibly drab day.

Nothing better than a calm, pampering saturday to refresh one’s self after a hard week’s work.  After a stroll through the autumn streets, through to the jogger and stroller lined seawall, my husbands retires to the sofa with ps2 controller in hand and I move forward with the spontaneous idea to get my feet renewed to their more glorious summertime days: hey it may not be toe bearing weather but with wandering eyes across the mats in yoga class there is no excuse to not keep our down there digits in prime condition.

With no shortage of day spas & nail salons to choose from, I narrow my selection to right downtown Vancouver.  Yaletown is overflowing with great nail spa’s but I am up for the challenge to find some where new and fresh in the mix.

Which brings me to option a. treating myself to revisit the Chi Spa at the Shangri-La… oh so fabulous of a spa, stepping inside the doors your mood mellows instantly.  The staff are never too overly friendly like some exclusive higher end spas and they really make each experience unique. A experience to indulge in; their CHI Refereshers, pedicures start at $90, manicures at $60.

And a most likely not equal in experience but a “pretty darn good alternate option” is the glistening new ChiChi Nails.  Sounds similar and end results are pretty close to par, however this time we swap up the personalized element tea with a OMG intensive massage chair.  Yes, the sometimes tacky but ever so enjoyable pedicure massage chair.  Which while rocketing me up down and sideways didn’t even budge the polish job by these polite, nicely dressed nail girls.  Offering a very sweet deal indeed, at ChiChi a full (and must say, very well done) mani-pedi takes you back a mere $45+tax.

delicately light colored kate bag

delicately light colored kate bag

Do you have a light colored leather bag that sits in the closest with a horrible dark denim stain!?

Recently we found the magical solution…

Milk and a micro-fibre cloth!

While browsing an in-flight magazine, with my denim stained bag tucked under my seat, I nearly screamed as the article caught my eye: “how to clean your white handbag”.  I’ve never been so happy to return home from holiday!

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR WHITE/LIGHT LEATHER HANDBAG:

For my first attempt it was 1% milk (all we had in the fridge…) and a clean microfibre cloth. The bag i distress was my kate bag as pictured above, with blue  all over the back panels.

Let the cloth soak up the milk and lighted wiped the exterior leather… not perfect but pretty good – and after a little more vigerous scrubbing it was nearly all gone! A bit of the ink remains near stitch lines but a massive improvement.

The bag is now good to go, no longer a complete embarrassment, I can walk proud of my luscious summer white leather bag again!
