the summer goddess glow : #BobbyPinDIY

bobbypin

Boy it sure is summertime outside these days! The heat has arrived.

And if you’re like me, there are more “up-do” days when the temps are this high… so it’s time to get playfully creative!

Here’s a take on the average at-ease bun: dig into the bottom of your make-up bag and grab a few of those bobbin pins to accessorize a light and easy fresh look for your day!

Step 1Fresh clean hair always feels and looks best. Use your typical lotions and potions, dry hair smooth with a paddle brush for a smooth base.

Step 2Pull hair back from the face and secure into a low side ponytail. Wrap ends up and around, creating a loose, twisted bun. Secure with bobby pins.

Step 3Use a contrasting color of bobby pins to make a row of chevrons (learn something new everyday, I had no clue that’s what this design is called!). Black pins are a good choice for blondes; silver would be better for dark strands. Slide one pin in on a diagonal, then a second pin through the first to create a stable v shape. Repeat until desired pattern is created.

Step 4Step back, glance yourself in the mirror, smile at the beautiful you.

meatpacking monday: take a stroll through NYC’s High Line park & get inspired!

One of the coolest spots in NYC by far has to be the High Line park, located on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. Founded by community residents in 1999, this city sanctuary was built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan. From catching some rays, to having a picnic, or even hosting a runway show, the High Line has it all. Almost everyday of the week this public park has an event or attraction for it’s visitors. If you live in NYC, or are just visiting this is a M U S T see.

This year’s fireworks soundtrack has been dubbed “America’s Mixtape,” and will feature both patriotic and pop songs that will be performed in sync with the fireworks. The music can be heard on 1010 WINS and Fresh 102.7. The night’s line-up will include performances by Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney. The first thing that pops into my mind when Thursday arrives- the week is almost over and I need a cocktail! Going out on the weekends is so over rated,…and over crowded. “Thirsty Thursday” is the perfect night to meet with friends and unwind, why not do it rooftop style? The trendy chic Empire Hotel located on the upper west side is a spot where beautiful people sip delicious cocktails and take in the amazing view.  How great is the view might you ask? There is only one thing that comes to mind when we reach this day of the week, “Thirsty Thursday”! It is time to kick back and unwind with a great glass of wine. Napa Valley, located in northern California, is known as the mecca of wineries and vineyards.  Why not kick off your Napa Valley excursion with an adventurous wine tour?  The tours point out landmarks-wineries along the way, and tell stories about local history and winemaking. The best part of the tour is tasting some of the world’s most delicious wines!

I know what your thinking…not everyone has the funds to visit Napa Valley for a wine tasting tour. Lucky for you every major city has a first-class winery or local wine events that offer tasting selections to fit everyone’s unique palette. If you’re located in NYC check out local wine events to get your drink on.

Something in the air this fall feels very different, in a special way. It definitely seems to brings out the energy in a lot of people. It also me and motivates me to go out and venture more. If you’ve got a bountiful amount of energy, I suggest going apple picking. You get to see gorgeous scenery, get fresh air, maybe picnic some, and come home with a basket of fresh apples. Plus, the scent of macintosh apples is just so wonderful!

The fall also marks the beginning of many beautiful things. Leaves turn golden brown and all of the sudden parks seem even more romantic a place to be. Following a new hire of a PR intern starting next month, Sienna Ray is going to be taking on a very original project- how exciting!

Hiking, walking tour, kayaking at an extraordinary destination can be extremely rewarding. What’s your beverage of choice in the summer? Is it a frappuccino, smoothie, coconut water, or just plain old water? As refreshing as frozen drinks, juice, and iced teas are, most of them contain with added sugar. Deep down we all know that water is the best for your body. Try carrying a bottle of water in your purse and see if you can’t cut down on the number of frozen drinks or cold beverages you purchase during lunch break. (It saves you a lot of money too) The collapsable Vapur bottle is a great choice for ladies who don’t have a lot of room in their purse for a giant bottle.

WOW if you have the energy this glowing city does not stop… Here’s a few memory making activities that filled my weekends & evenings this spring & into summer:

part#1: OUTDOOR/PATIO/ROOFTOP DRINKS (in no official order, all equally fab!):

1. Biergarten at the standard hotel in the meatpacking district – picnic table style, crowded as ever with a popular & vibrant new yorkers

2. Mé Bar in Korea town, secret gem of a rooftop with $22 bottles of wine, small patio area, least “glam” of my selections which is often a nice change, sweet view of Rockefeller center which is literally a block away, 32nd street between 5th & 6th, enter the

3. Central park, byob + picnic basket, my favorite area is here: between turtle pond & the great lawn

4. The frying pan, on the river near chelsea, a couple old boats tied up to the pier, fresh, fun and can get a bit crazy into the evenings… fantastic sunset views to boot

5. Corner of 10th St & west 4th St in the west village (yes both streets, love the proper village vibe in this area!) just a block down from the apt I call home in nyc, 4 bar/restaurants right on that corner with good looking young people… been know as my gf’s and my “local” – plenty of cafes/restaurants/bars all throughout the area between there and the meat packing districts, many with either opened up walls/windows, streetside tables, back gardens etc

6. Soho park, great little place with well priced wine, sit in the tiny garden area and put your feet up after hours of soho wandering and shopping! (get your daily dose of greens with their chicago style fried zucchini stix)

7. Oh cannot forget about stone street in the business district, busy most nights but likely wed & thurs are your best bets for suited man watching – bars line both sides of the picnic table filled cobblestone street – the Mexican place is know to do some of the best gauc in the city

8. Shake shack, a nyc staple, there’s a bunch of these throughout the city but the main attraction would be the one in Madison square park, outdoor seating and great people watching – good tie on for shopping in the flat iron district

9. Back again at the meatpacking district, the well-known brasserie Pastis attracts a very international crowd: cannot go wrong with fab french fair paired with curbside & starstudded ‘hidden-behind sunglasses’ celeb spotting

…more? of course! share your favourite places with us too!

now time to get out & play xx

modern monday: picnic basket

Add a comment

Picnicking is one of the fun and free activities one can do in the summer. All that’s needed is a park, and of course, a picnic basket to hold yummy goodies.

Having a fashionable picnic basket is like having a fashionable handbag. Back in the days when I shopped at Gap Kids, I used to have my (older) sister carry the shopping bag for me because I was too embarrassed carry the bag myself. With that said, I do not want any of my readers to have to suffer the same embarrassment of carrying a not so good looking picnic basket.

I suggest checking Picnic Time out. They carry the most innovative picnic and lifestyle products. Their products can be found at Amazon, Kohls, Fresh Picnic, and many more online stores. The metro baskets (pictured) are especially nice because they are collapsible and are insulated.

Barefoot running- in stoplight colors

While venturing out of my comfort zone this weekend at a stoplight party I ran into a girl sporting a pair of the most luminous running shoes imaginable. I am not usually one to strike up a conversation with a stranger but I was so intrigued I had to ask about them!

Besides showing a fantastic version of “it’s complicated” status at said traffic signal event, she went on to tell me how the Newton running shoe is super practical as well as on-trend with spring’s brightness craze. Best known for  replicating the benefits of running barefoot without having to actually run barefoot, vastly reducing hip and knee pain. Using very advanced technology they are at the forefront of their industry – with many casual to professional athletes becoming huge supporters in quite a short period of time.

And as we all love our multi-tasking, whether it’s getting through a tough work week or accessorizing with a handbag that goes from day to night, if this new friend of mine had to run somewhere after the party (no pun intended) she would be more than good to go!

gotta love the sole!

Newton Running Shoes are headquartered in Boulder, CO and sold worldwide – including a fan favorite Brazilian running store on the Upper East side of Manhattan Track & Field store
